What kinds of projects do students build?

Students build projects that connect their interests with real-world problems. Projects can span areas such as AI, healthcare, finance, education, cybersecurity, robotics, sustainability, business, social impact, sports, and more. Depending on the problem they choose to address, the final project may take the form of an application, an AI model, a research-based report, or a working demo. The goal is to help students turn an area they care about into a tangible solution.

How are project problem statements decided?

Students begin by exploring their interests and identifying real-world problems they would like to solve. With guidance from their mentors, they refine their ideas into a clear, manageable problem statement that can be addressed using AI ML within the program timeline. Mentors help students consider the problem's relevance, feasibility, available data, and potential approach. This ensures that the project is both meaningful to the student and appropriate for their experience level.

What tech stack do students use?

The technologies used depend on the project's goals and requirements. Students may work with programming tools and environments like Python, Git, VS Code, and Jupyter Notebooks, alongside AI and machine learning models, natural language processing, data analysis libraries, and other relevant technologies. Rather than learning tools for their own sake, students are guided to choose technologies that help them address their problem and build their solution.

How long does it take to complete a project?

Projects are developed over the four-week cohort, with the scope tailored to the student's experience level and the complexity of the problem. Students follow a structured process that includes identifying a problem, researching and defining the project, developing the solution, testing or refining their work, and presenting a final project or demo. Larger ideas may offer opportunities for continued development after the cohort ends.

What happens if a student gets stuck on their project?

Getting stuck is a normal part of building something new. Mentors help students understand the challenge, break it into manageable steps, explore possible solutions, and work through technical or conceptual difficulties. When additional support is needed, mentors may provide further guidance or arrange additional sessions, depending on the situation. The aim is to help students make progress while understanding the process, rather than simply having someone solve the problem for them.

What will students have at the end of the project?

Students finish with a tangible piece of work that demonstrates how they applied what they learned to a real-world problem. Depending on the project, deliverables may include a project summary, final presentation, demonstration, a hosted application, access to the source code, and a GitHub repository. Students can also document their problem statement, approach, development process, and key learnings. This gives them concrete work they can showcase in a portfolio and discuss in future academic or extracurricular contexts.

Who owns the project, and will it be shared publicly?

Students retain ownership of the projects they develop. BetterMind Labs features a student's work, name, or photograph on its website or social media only with permission from both the student and their parent or guardian.

Can students use their projects for competitions, science fairs, or publications?

Yes, students may choose to continue developing their projects and explore opportunities such as science fairs, competitions, or research publications. A project developed during the program can provide a starting point for this next step. Eligibility, submission requirements, and publication standards vary by opportunity, and additional research, testing, documentation, or development may be necessary. Participation in BetterMind Labs does not guarantee competition awards or publication.
